About Donovan (Dated: 12/01/01) |

My early party years began in the Hollywood club scene when I lived in Los Angeles. Here, the night life culture revolved around hip hop and R&B. I, like most LA people, could not appreciate electronic music, with its "weird" noises and often lack of vocals. When I returned to the Bay Area in 1996, I struggled to find the upscale nightlife scene I had come to enjoy in Los Angeles. It wasn’t until one evening I stumbled across a small little club called 1015 (that at the time was the most popular nightclub in San Francisco), my eyes were opened to a whole new world of beautiful, fashionable people and soulfully inspiring music. That evening was a rite of passage, a rebirth of some sort… Something clicked and opened a part of me that I did not know existed. This foreign music called “house” embraced me and I embraced it, and its sounds reached places within me that I had never felt before. I immediately fell in love with it. And when I danced to it, it almost felt like the music was making love to me. My life was never the same after that. This music provided a new source of passionate energy that has fed into many areas of my life. I
had a connection with the music that I could not live without. I began
spending hundreds of
dollars a month on new house CDs and imports trying to appease my voracious
appetite. But it was never enough. I quickly became very frustrated at not being
able to find the type of music I was hearing in the clubs on these
commercial CDs that were offered in mainstream music stores such as Tower and
Virgin… which lead me deeper… deeper into the fiber of the San Francisco
club culture. So I began visiting DJ record stores and buying house vinyl simply
for my own listening pleasure. |
